Today’s activities are all about PLANETS. We are adding on to our first day, HOME, second day TOWN , third day ANIMALS, fourth day WORLD and now … in case you feel like launching off into outer space…we’re exploring the universe! Our activities today have a really fun paper toy: we’re making a rocket ship! This toy has 2 versions: Color in or Draw Your Own. The rocket instructions are simple: Color and draw how you’d like it. Then, cut out each part and fold on the dotted lines. Glue the underside of the bottom tabs on the Rocket Top. Match one side to the corresponding Rocket Body side. Glue and press each section, starting on one side, until you end up on the final side, where you’ll glue the side tab of the Rocket Top to the underside of the side it will connect to. Do the same for the side tab of the Rocket Body. (Don’t try to complete the top or the body separately…it’s a lot easier when you glue the two sections together and ultimately form a 3D shape.) After you’ve made your Rocket Body complete with the top, Glue the top of each smoke piece to the underside of each rocket body section. You now have a Rocket! Put your hand inside to make a puppet, stand it up on all 6 smock pieces, or zoom around the room! We will also be coloring Astronauts so you can color and cut out to make a space scene! Or draw your own face to make an astronaut self-portrait! There is also a coloring page for you to draw in the details of each of the planets in the solar system. Because our planet is a SPHERE, our art lesson today is HOW TO DRAW A SPHERE. This lesson might be considered more advanced, but I’m teaching light and shadow in a way that I hope even the youngest kids can follow along. It will be a good introduction on how to make a ball, or sphere and will bring confidence as children think about how to make thing 3D! I think you’ll like it!
